WEST ROGERS PARK
For generations, Chicago has attracted waves of immigrants. On the northern edge of the city, West Rogers Park is home to many recent arrivals. This stretch of W. Devon Avenue is the main commercial strip of this diverse community.
Bus: 49B, 155.
Begin at N. Western Avenue and W. Devon Avenue (pronounced duh-VAWN), and head west along Devon. Here is the place to see Chicago at its most international. Although not a scenic or touristy part of town, this thriving urban neighborhood offers plenty of sights and smells. More than any one shop or restaurant, it’s the mix of businesses and the community that makes this area so intriguing. Little India and Little Russia merge here, and other cultural communities are represented as well. As you walk, you’ll pass signs in Arabic, Russian, and Hindi. You’ll encounter countless eateries, electronics shops, and discount emporiums. Tucked between them are Pakistani and Indian grocery stores carrying bulk spices and big gunny sacks of rice. Clothing shops display brightly colored salwaar khameez and saris. There are shops selling kosher meat, stores specializing in Islamic literature, and Indian video stores. The street takes on a more Slavic character as you approach N. California Avenue, where you’ll find a Russian-language bookstore. At California, turn around and retrace your steps, selecting an eatery of the nationality of your choice.
